Branding for small businesses: where to start
You do not need a big-brand budget to have an identity that works. What you do need is order: decide a few things and apply them the same way every time. Most small businesses do not have a design problem, they have a consistency problem.
Write in one sentence who you serve and what makes you different
If you cannot say it without empty adjectives, no logo is going to fix it. That sentence is what later guides the colour, the tone and even the photos you post.
Choose less: two typefaces and three colours
Consistency comes from repeating, not from varying. With one typeface for headings, another for body text and a short palette you can already build everything: signage, receipts, Instagram and the website.
Apply it first where you are most visible
Before the forty-page manual, sort out the three places your customer finds you: the space or the packaging, the Instagram profile and the Google listing. That is where recognition is won.
Write the rules down, even if it is five lines
A short document with the colours, the typefaces and what should never be done to the logo keeps the identity from drifting the moment someone new joins the team.
